THE OCTOPUS 8
THE OCTOPUS 8
Come celebrate with Octopus Books and Poor Claudia as Bad Blood turns 21 with Mathias Svalina, Amy Lawless, Tyler Brewington and Kelly Schirmann. Come find us at ADX on Saturday, Dec. 14. Tell your acquaintances, bring your friends.
We are starting one hour later than usual. Doors at 8. Poems at 8:30 sharp. We’ll treat you with some poetry ephemera made special for the event, and beer from our friends, Gigantic Brewing. Also, please remember to bring a few big boy bills for the books table. It’ll be free to get in, and there’ll be a happy jar at the bar.
Also, the party will keep going into the next day. Bad Blood’s presses, Octopus Books and Poor Claudia, will be tabling at Publication Fair downtown at The Cleaners from 12 to 6.
MATHIAS SVALINA is the author of three books, most recently The Explosions from Subito Press. Big Lucks will release his book Wastoid in 2014. He is a member of Team Octopus. He lives in Denver.
AMY LAWLESS is the author of two books of poems, most recently My Dead (Octopus Books). She lives in Manhattan.
KELLY SCHIRMANN is the co-author of Nature Machine (Poor Claudia) & half of the band Young Family, whose second EP will be released from Spork Press this year. She lives, writes, sings, & makes in Portland, Oregon.
TYLER BREWINGTON is one author of Nature Machine (Poor Claudia), the author of Dear Stray Volcano (alice blue), & an MFA candidate in poetry at Vermont College of Fine Arts. He is from Boise, Idaho.
I’m going to be po-busy on Thursday, March 7, and I’m hoping you’d want to be equally po-busy with me. Step 1: Go to the No Thousands reading at 6pm where I’ll be in support of two of our new Octopus Books, James Gendron’s Sexual Boat (Sex Boats) and Amy Lawless’ My Dead, and Poor Claudia’s new book, A Voluptuous Dream During an Eclipse by Elaine Kahn. Black Ocean, 1913 and Action Books will be there too. And then Step Two: Go to the Tin House/Octopus Books reading after 7pm to celebrate the release of two of our other new books, Brandon Shimoda’s Portuguese and Patricia Lockwood’s Balloon Pop Outlaw Black. Then after that, Step Three: go to the Ink Node reading after 9pm where I’ll be reading for a few minutes along with Octopus Books’ own Alisa Heinzman and another handful of killer poets. Phew. The task at hand is daunting, but it’s worth pretending like we can be in three places at once.
If you can’t make it to either of the Octopus readings, it’d still be nice to see you at our table at the bookfair. We have three new books to sell you, along with the entirety of our own catalog and the catalog of our chapbook imprint, Poor Claudia. We also have letter pressed Bad Blood broadsides, screen printed tote bags, and Drew Swenhaugen will be sitting in a 25 cent dunk tank full of whiskey.
If you want to see a spread of Octopus Books books and Poor Claudia books for sale on a table, among a beautiful roomful of other local shops, designers, and products, you know, to buy stuff for your friends and family, let me suggest coming to visit me and Drew and Joseph at Union/Pine for the Give Good Gift fair from 10 to 3pm this Saturday with a $20 bill in your back pocket. We have the two newest and best selling small press books in the nation to sell you, and we also have an even newer book, so hot off the coals, that I don’t even want to tell you about it in writing yet. But it’ll be there. So. See you soon.
