On temporary hiatus as of 7/1
I just finished an online workshop with a writer I very much admire, Zachary Schomburg. It was truly rewarding. Learned much about the craft through great talks, prompts, critique, revision. He’s a wise guide & if possible you should try it.
Without exaggeration, this workshop was transformative. Easy and comfortable but profoundly helpful. And so constructive (and fascinating) to see him sharpen poems in real time I thought were already sharp. His explanations were clear and his questions productive. Many “aha” moments. And he’s just an all-around friendly, curious person who’s also steady at the wheel. I highly recommend it to elevate not just poetry, but the process and play that are needed to fuel it.
I’ve taken four workshops with Zachary so far. By the end of each workshop I’m always left feeling renewed enthusiasm for my work and writing process. He has a talent for approaching every piece of writing set before him with curiosity, generosity, and an expert eye for craft. His genuine enjoyment for figuring out what makes a piece work is contagious, and the workshop atmosphere is collaborative and generative.
My poetry was like an infant just barely able to crawl. Because of Zach’s guidance, I learned about word play, crafting the poem, giving it depth and nuance. He has the ability to push, poke, prod, and point me to doors.
The feedback and suggestions Zach provides extend beyond the prose/poem of focus and can be used for future edits and endeavors. He not only helped to polish my work but also asked questions from a perspective I hadn’t considered. With unique writing prompts, reading assignments, and frequent collaborative warm-ups, his workshop was something I looked forward to all week long.
